ETIAS 2026: New Requirements and Warnings for Travel in Europe

From the end of 2026, 1.4 billion people from more than 60 countries will need travel authorization - the so-called ETIAS - to cross the border into 30 European countries, including citizens of Georgia.

What Is ETIAS?

ETIAS, or the European Travel Information and Authorization System, is a requirement for entering 30 European countries for people who have visa-free travel.

With a valid ETIAS authorization, you can cross the border into European countries multiple times, for short-term visits — typically up to 90 days within a 180-day period. However, this authorization is not a guarantee of entry. At the border, a border protection officer will require you to show your passport and other documents and will check whether you meet the conditions for entry.

Submitting the Application

You can apply for the authorization either through ETIAS's official website or through the mobile app. The application fee is €7. Applicants under 18 and over 70 can apply for free.

Processing the Application

After submitting the application, processing and receiving a response typically takes a few minutes. However, the process may take longer in some cases and last several days. If additional documents are required for the authorization process, the review process will take up to 14 days, and up to 30 days if you're called in for an interview. That's why it's best to submit your authorization application several weeks before your planned trip.

Once your application is approved, you'll receive the application confirmation number by email, which you should keep. After your application processing begins, you'll also receive an email confirming that processing of your application has started.

After receiving authorization, it's important to check that your personal data - such as your name, passport number, and other details - is entered correctly. (If any information is entered incorrectly, you won't be able to cross the border even if you've received authorization.)

If your application is not approved and you receive a negative response regarding authorization, you'll be sent an email stating the reasons for the refusal. If you believe an unfair decision was made, you'll be able to appeal the response.

ETIAS Validity Period

The travel authorization for Europe is valid for a period of three years. However, if your passport expires before the ETIAS authorization does, it's important to submit a new application.

It's important to hold a valid ETIAS travel authorization for the duration of your stay in Europe. You may return to or leave the country at any time, as long as you observe the time limits.

What Should You Keep in Mind?

ETIAS travel authorization is linked to your travel document, so make sure you carry the same document at the border that you used in your ETIAS application. Otherwise, you won't be permitted entry into the European countries where ETIAS is required.

Holding a valid ETIAS authorization does not automatically mean you're granted entry. When you arrive at the border, border protection officers will check whether you meet the conditions for entry.
